To encounter Professor Michael J. Scoullos is to meet a man who unites the rigour of a scientist with the soul of a diplomat, and the depth of a intellectual with the passion of a lifelong environmentalist. He is not merely an academic figure but a moral compass in the Mediterranean landscape , a voice of knowledge, reason, and hope connecting the two shores of the sea he calls “our common home.”
From Science to Society
An environmental chemist and oceanographer by training, Scoullos built his career at the intersection of science, policy and society. With a Master’s and Doctorate in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Athens, and a PhD in Oceanography from the University of Liverpool, he rose to become Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Athens and Director of its Environmental Chemistry Laboratory. There, he nurtured generations of students and researchers, urging them to view the environment not only as a scientific concern but as a cultural and ethical responsibility.
Bridging Research and Policy
From the earliest stages of his career, Scoullos sought to bridge the gap between research and policy. His work has long focused on pollution, environmental management and diplomacy, public awareness, and education for sustainable development, grounded in a belief that sustainability must be learned, lived, and shared. To him, protecting the planet is not an abstract duty but a deeply virtuous human act of care and intergenerational continuity.
A Voice of Authority and Trust
Over the years, his expertise and integrity have made him one of the most respected environmental voices in the Mediterranean, Europe and beyond. He has served as the European Parliament’s representative on the Management Board of the European Environment Agency, and as a scientific advisor to intergovernmental institutions such as the European Union, UNEP, UNESCO, IFAD, and IUCN, as well as to numerous national governments.
Leadership in Global and Regional Initiatives
He also has been leading a series of EU capacity-building programmes enhancing the environmental policies of the Southern Neighbourhood countries since 2009 and chaired the World Bank’s International Expert Committee on the Red Sea–Dead Sea project, helping shape regional cooperation on water, energy, and climate.
Networks for Environmental Cooperation
A tireless builder of networks, Professor Scoullos has presided over some of the most influential Mediterranean and European environmental organizations, including the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE), the Global Water Partnership–Mediterranean (GWP-Med), the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), and the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage.
Education for a Sustainable Future
He also chairs Greece’s national committee for UNESCO’s MAB Programme, and founded the Mediterranean Universities Network for Sustainable Development, which links universities across continents through a shared educational vision, one where knowledge serves transformation. Since 2011, Scoullos also holds the UNESCO Chair on Management and Education for Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean, through which he continues to inspire institutions and communities to weave sustainability into education, governance, and everyday life.
Publications and Thought Leadership
Through hundreds of studies, reports, and over 400 scientific papers, Scoullos has shaped Mediterranean environmental thinking. His books, including Environment and Society: Education and Public Awareness for Sustainability (UNESCO, 1998), Water in the Mediterranean (2001), Mediterranean Food: Historical, Environmental, Health & Cultural Dimensions (2007), and Education for Sustainable Development in MAB Biosphere Reserves (UNESCO, 2013), are considered key references in environmental education and policy.
Each work reflects his conviction that science must speak to life, and that sustainability begins in the mind, before it is built in the world.
Recognition and Humility
His contributions have earned him some of the highest international honors: the Gold Medal of the City of Paris, the UNESCO Simon Bolivar Medal, the Environmental Award of the Academy of Athens, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the National Order of the Cedar (Lebanon), and medals from Pope Paul VI, among many others.
Yet, beyond these decorations, it is his humility and dedication that leave the most lasting impression.
