From the Mountains of Timahdite to the World: A Journey of Knowledge and Humanity

In the high Middle Atlas, in a small town called ” Timahdite,” Hammou Laamrani was born. Amid snow-capped mountains in winter and flourishing fields in spring, his awareness of the world began to take shape. Nature was, for him, a school, and humanity the center of all knowledge from an early age. He saw in every stream a promise of life, in every tree a lesson in patience and perseverance. This environment planted in him the seeds of boundless passion, a love for knowledge and nature, and a commitment to serving humanity above all else.
He belonged to a generation that read by candlelight and moonlight, a generation that exerted extraordinary effort to access information. Knowledge was not simply a button away; its scarcity honed his curiosity, patience, and depth of thought. It taught him the value of diligence and perseverance in every step of life, instilling in him the understanding that the Earth is our mother, water is life, and every tree and river has a story worth telling.
From this foundation began his lifelong journey with both nature and humanity, a journey that would later take him across the Arab and African worlds, carrying a singular message: knowledge must serve humanity, and humans are responsible for the Earth they inhabit.
Although his personality matured, his childhood remained present in his demeanor and skills. I remember seeing him at a conference in Cairo in 2010, leading a session that brought together eleven Arab ministers in the field of water under the “Wadi Mina” project, which he coordinated in Egypt. The ministers’ eyes reflected admiration for his skillful leadership and his capacity to guide public policy in water management.
In that moment, I also saw him as a child in his mother’s arms, a blend of innocence and tenderness intertwined with the greatness and responsibility of a man who had become a symbol of creativity and professionalism. His mother’s eyes shone with pride, asking me to pray for him, declaring before me her blessing so the world could witness her approval. The echo of her voice still resonates: “ Hammou, may God bless him.”
Once, I spoke with his father, sharing my impression of Hammou’s brilliance in Cairo. He replied simply, speaking the language of duty and humility. There was no boastfulness, true greatness, he implied, lies in quiet dedication, in planting love for one’s homeland, humanity, and values through daily modest actions rather than seeking fame. It became clear that Hammou’s stature is measured not only by international achievements but by the impact he leaves in hearts, families, and communities.
In Morocco, within university corridors, he wove theoretical knowledge into practice. He studied natural sciences, then specialized in animal ecology, environment, and health before traveling to Copenhagen for his PhD, deeply exploring ecosystems and the relationship between development and human well-being. At every step, he carried a humble heart, eager for knowledge to make a real difference in people’s lives. His upbringing instilled values of humility, moral integrity, and the conviction that knowledge is only complete when it serves humanity, a principle that guided his lifelong journey, where thought merged with action, research with humanity, and science with compassion.
He studied at Imam Al-Ghazali High School in Meknes, earning a baccalaureate in experimental sciences, then continued at the University of Fez, obtaining a degree in natural sciences, followed by an advanced diploma in animal ecology from the Faculty of Sciences and Agricultural Institute in Rabat. He later earned a third-cycle PhD in environment and health from Hassan II University and pursued further doctoral studies in environmental and development sciences at the University of Copenhagen. His academic path was complemented with advanced training in public policy, statistics, research methods, and qualitative mapping, blending theory with field application.
He is fluent in Amazigh (his mother tongue), Arabic, French, and English, and has beginner-level skills in Spanish and Russian, making him a bridge across multiple cultures and enabling him to communicate with diverse teams and communities worldwide.
Ghana: Water Management and Ecosystem Health
His professional journey began in Ghana at the office of the Canadian International Water Management Institute, where his workspace was not just an office but an open field. There, he worked directly with farmers and researchers, applying scientific solutions to protect the land and serve humanity. He learned as much from them as he taught them, demonstrating that water is not merely an economic resource but a human right and a foundation of justice. His work left a lasting African imprint, blending science with social equity.
Egypt: Food Security and Climate Adaptation
He then moved to Egypt as Senior Program Officer at the International Center for Development Research, leading major projects in food security and sustainable agriculture. He established regional networks connecting experts from ten Arab countries to exchange practical knowledge, from Jordan and Lebanon to Tunisia and Morocco. He was always in the field, transforming scientific knowledge into tangible solutions for communities, especially in climate change adaptation. His notable initiatives included KariaNet, a knowledge exchange network in rural areas spanning ten Arab countries, a forest management model in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and a regional water demand management initiative covering eight Arab countries.
Lebanon: Regional Leadership and Human Dimension
His journey brought him to Lebanon, where a small office on the sixth floor of the ESCWA headquarters offered a daily view blending history and coexistence: the Mohamed Al-Amin Mosque and nearby St. George Maronite Church stood as symbols of religious diversity. This daily scene reminded him that humanitarian work cannot be separated from the spirit of peace and coexistence. He managed large regional programs, from sustainable natural resource management to climate adaptation across Syria, Palestine, Yemen, Morocco, and beyond. His work resonated internationally, earning respect in any language, English, classical Arabic, or refined French, where he helped design strategies linking water, food, energy, and climate change while emphasizing local empowerment and community participation.
The Human Dimension
Hammou Laamrani’s journey has been more than professional, it has been a life dedicated to service and humanity. He listens first, seeks practical solutions to ease daily struggles, and ensures that nature is part of the solution rather than merely a resource. His modest smile, sincerity, and attentive nature have made him beloved and trusted, leaving an impact in every team and community. He has published numerous scientific studies on agriculture, water, environmental health, and food security, contributed to global publications, delivered hundreds of policy briefs and regional reports, and organized national and regional training programs to build capacity and disseminate knowledge.
His contributions have been recognized by international and national institutions, significantly improving the lives of rural communities from Ghana to Lebanon, from Morocco to Yemen.
Hammou Laamrani’s journey resembles a river, flowing from the mountains of Timahdite through Africa and the Arab world, nourishing land and people wherever it passes, pure in essence, humble in its path, magnificent in its contribution. A global Moroccan, he transformed knowledge into a tool for serving humanity, compassion into a methodology, and the Earth into a home for dignity and life, from the Atlas Mountains to the Arab world and beyond.
He embodies a rare combination of sound vision, early curiosity, relentless pursuit of knowledge, high professionalism, delicate humanity, scientific rigor, and ethical loyalty. In every station of his journey, Hammou has remained humble, kind, and wise, speaking to hearts before minds, with a calm voice, radiant ideas, and precise vision, a river of love and dedication that leaves a permanent mark on every community he touches.
