Glasgow – Forty-five governments, led by the UK, pledged on Saturday to urgently invest in nature conservation and more sustainable farming methods, on the day of the nature and land use of COP26 in Glasgow.
This includes mobilizing some $ 4 billion in new public sector investment in agricultural innovation to help make these techniques and resources affordable and accessible to hundreds of millions of farmers.
Investments will relate in particular to the development of resistant crops and regenerative solutions to improve soil health.
About a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, forestry and other land uses. There is therefore an urgent need to reform the way food is grown and consumed in order to combat climate change.
An emergency that continues to grow as demand for food grows, as farmers’ livelihoods are also under increasing pressure from the impact of climate change on productivity.
To help farmers adapt and make food systems more resilient in the future, more sustainable practices are essential.
This is why these countries are committed to transforming agricultural and food systems through policy reforms and through research and innovation, in order to reduce emissions, while ensuring access for all to food and water. use.
Sixteen countries will launch a ‘policy agenda’ and more than 160 stakeholders will join a ‘global agenda for innovation in agriculture’ to pave the way for the global transition to resilient agriculture and food systems, as well as more sustainable modes of exploitation.
