But outside this narrow visual frame, another war rages in silence, a war that is neither seen nor announced, where no “victories” are celebrated. It is the war on the air… the water… and the earth itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bIn the context of the current military escalation between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, the confrontation is reduced to missiles launched, facilities targeted, and mutual retaliations. Yet, the deeper truth lies not in the trajectory of the missile, but in the legacy it leaves behind upon impact. \u200bEvery explosion, whether over a military site or near critical infrastructure, releases a complex cocktail of toxic gases, particulate matter, and heavy metals into the atmosphere. These substances do not remain where they fall; they rise and disperse, entering the atmospheric dynamics to become part of the air we all share. What happens in a distant sky is never truly distant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bAt some point, war shifts from a geographical event to a climatic phenomenon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bMilitary operations, from jet sorties to missile launches and the resulting infernos, produce staggering amounts of greenhouse gases. These emissions are rarely counted in official figures, yet they accumulate, accelerating the planet\u2019s thermal imbalance. War, in this sense, does not just consume fuel… it consumes what remains of our climate stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bBut the air is not the only victim.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWhen industrial plants, energy sites, or sensitive infrastructure are targeted, the danger seeps into the water. Oil spills, chemical leaks, and combustion residues find their way into rivers and seas or leach into groundwater. In an ecologically interconnected region like the Mediterranean Basin, these impacts do not remain confined to a single spot; marine and atmospheric currents redistribute pollution in a cycle that recognizes no national sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWe are here… part of this circle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bIn Tunisia, the scene may seem geographically remote, but the air we breathe and the sea that borders our shores are both vulnerable to this impact. Fine particles from explosions can travel thousands of kilometers, degrading air quality even in areas that have never seen a bombardment. Similarly, large-scale marine pollution in the Eastern Mediterranean could gradually drift westward, threatening marine ecosystems and the fisheries upon which entire communities depend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe Earth, too… will remember.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bSoil in conflict zones absorbs toxins that persist for decades. They do not vanish; they enter the food chain, passing from one generation to the next. What is planted tomorrow in contaminated soil will carry the scars of what happened today. War, in this sense, does not end with a ceasefire; it merely enters a new phase, quieter, and far more dangerous. \u200bThe loss that never makes the headlines is the loss of biodiversity. Explosions and fires destroy habitats, displace species, and disrupt balances that took millennia to form. Each time a site is bombed, it is not just human life that is lost, but a thread in the web of life on this planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bYet, there are those who cheer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe scene is reduced to a “successful strike” or a “strong response,” while the truth is that every party, regardless of their slogans, contributes to the same outcome: polluting the air, poisoning the water, and weakening the Earth\u2019s capacity to heal. In this war, there is no ecological victor. Everyone loses… even those who believe themselves to be far away.\u200bBecause what rises today in the skies of the Middle East… will be part of the world\u2019s air tomorrow. And what leaks today into the soil there… will find its way, one way or another, into the cycle of life to which we all belong.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe most dangerous aspect of war is not the sound, nor the flame that flickers for a moment and then fades. The real danger begins when everything vanishes from sight, and the particles remain suspended in the sky, searching for a lung to settle in, a drop of water to dissolve in, or a grain of soil to inhabit for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWe do not see it… but we are paying for it slowly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bIn modern warfare, the story does not end at the front lines. Every exploding missile releases a complex cloud of gases, chemicals, and heavy metals, lead, mercury, and toxic compounds, that ascend into the atmosphere and begin a long transcontinental journey, ignoring all political maps. What happens “there” does not stay there. \u200bScience leaves no room for denial: military operations are a massive source of greenhouse gas emissions. Fighter jets, tanks, fuel fires, and the destruction of infrastructure pump enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. It is as if war does not only kill humans but also accelerates the planet\u2019s suffocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe Earth… remembers everything<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWhen the Earth is bombed, it doesn’t just crack; it suffers from a toxic memory. The soil becomes an open warehouse for chemicals, absorbing them and quietly passing them on to plants, then to animals… and finally to us. It is an unbroken chain that requires no noise.In many parts of the world, old wars still live beneath our feet. Vietnam, for instance, never truly ended its war; chemicals used decades ago still seep through the soil and water, reaching the bodies of generations unborn at the time. War, in this sense, does not end… it transforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWater: The Most Fragile Victim<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWhen an industrial facility is bombed or a sewage network is damaged, toxins begin their journey into rivers and then into groundwater, where they settle for years or even decades before returning in a glass of water, a piece of vegetable, or a human body. Water does not scream… but it stores everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bAnd in the sky, the battle continues in another form. Fine particles from explosions travel vast distances on the wind, affecting air quality and accelerating climate change. No one is immune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThen there is the loss that cannot be quantified: biodiversity. Forests that burn, animals that flee, and ecosystems that collapse in silence. Every shell does not just leave a crater in the ground; it opens a void in the balance of nature, a void that may never be filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bAnd yet… there are those who cheer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThey forget that the air knows no “enemy” or “friend,” and that toxic gases do not stop at borders. What rises there… we will breathe some of it here. What leaks there… will one day find its way to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWar is no longer a local event… it is a planetary phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe real danger is not in the moment of explosion, but in what follows: in the soil that gradually loses its fertility, in the water that becomes less safe, in the air that carries invisible traces, and in a climate that grows more turbulent year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThese are not side effects… they are the heart of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bPerhaps it is time to redefine the victim: it is not only those counted in news bulletins, but also the earth that is polluted, the water that sickens, the air that chokes, and the planet that pays, in heavy silence, the cost of conflicts it did not choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bIn the end, no one wins a war that pollutes everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWhat if this war, with all its fire and smoke, is but a prelude to something far more catastrophic? What if humanity slides, once again, to the brink of madness, where battles are no longer contained, and maps can no longer hold the disaster? What would become of the Earth if these confrontations turned into nuclear war, where destruction is measured not just by the number of victims, but by the extinguishing of entire cities, a sky weighed down by ash, and a future erased before it is written?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bCan the human mind grasp a moment when the air itself becomes a hazard, the water a source of suspicion, and the earth a memory saturated with death? Or are we, in the heat of this escalation, walking, in heavy silence, toward a question we cannot afford to answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
